How it works

Spark allocates toll free numbers that terminate on our nominated Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) or mobile access lines. 

The numbers will be available for ordinary incoming and outbound calls or on lines dedicated to inbound toll free calls only (i.e. lines which cannot make ordinary inbound or outbound PSTN calls).

Toll free calls can be made from almost any New Zealand telephone network and can terminate on any local or mobile New Zealand number - except other toll free numbers or 0900 numbers.

Any toll free call initiated within New Zealand can be terminated on any international phone number.

Spark also offers inward international toll free calling where a toll free number is set up in a foreign country and calls made there will terminate in New Zealand.

While we manage the pricing and contractual arrangements for this service, Chorus will manage the provisioning, billing and any fault resolution required.

Please note: Toll Free is only available to a service provider’s end-user. Residential toll free services such as Home 0800 do not apply to this product.
 

 

Enhanced features explained

Geographic control
Also called Geographic Diversion or Call Screening, Geographic Control allows one Toll Free number to be answered in separate geographical regions, depending on where the call originated.

It also enables screening or blocking of calls from unwanted regions. 

There are three levels of geographic area available as defined by Spark which divide the country into 17, 74 or 455 regions.

The precise boundaries of these regions are available from Spark and only apply to calls made on Spark's fixed network.

 

Percentage call distribution
Spreads call answering between different locations and determines what percentage will be answered where.


Additional call distribution plans
Stores up to ten answering patterns in advance that can be activated with a phone call.

 

Call prompting
An IVR type service where incoming toll free calls can be terminated on different numbers when the caller is prompted by a pre-recorded message.

 

Courtesy response
A pre-recorded message that is played to the caller before the call is forwarded on to the final terminating number, e.g.: “you have reached Better Beans, please wait while your call is connected”. This is useful to avoid charges due to calls made in error.

 

Toll free infocall
Callers can dial a free-of-charge number to hear the message.

 

Toll free follow me
Change the answering point of the Toll Free Number(s) using an IVR service.

 

Toll free distinctive tone
Adds four beeps to the start of incoming toll free calls so that the receiver can tell that the call was made using the Toll Free number.

This is useful where toll free calls may be terminated on a home phone so that the call can be answered appropriately.
